“President Trump and Sen. Mike Lee stood firm because election integrity is not a partisan issue—it’s an American one.”— Ken Cuccinelli, National Chairman, Election Transparency Initiative

Arlington, VA — June 24, 2026 — The Election Transparency Initiative (ETI) today applauded President Donald Trump and U.S. Senator Mike Lee for their unwavering commitment to election integrity after President Trump announced he would delay signing bipartisan housing legislation until Congress advances the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

President Trump announced Wednesday that he was canceling the housing bill signing ceremony and would withhold action on the legislation until Congress passes the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections.

“President Trump and Sen. Mike Lee deserve tremendous credit for refusing to let election security be pushed aside yet again,” said Ken Cuccinelli, National Chairman of ETI. “For months, Congress has found ways to move spending bills, housing bills, and other priorities while leaving election integrity behind. Today, that changed.”

Cuccinelli continued, “Sen. Mike Lee never stopped fighting for the SAVE Act, even when others were ready to move on. His persistence helped bring election security back to the forefront of the national conversation.”

ETI noted that Americans overwhelmingly support commonsense election safeguards, including proof of citizenship requirements and voter identification measures. The organization has repeatedly urged Congress to treat election security with the same urgency it applies to other national priorities.

“President Trump made clear today that protecting the integrity of American elections is not optional,” Cuccinelli added. “Congress should seize this opportunity, pass the SAVE Act, and send it to the President’s desk.”

“President Trump could have taken the easy path and signed the housing bill. Instead, he chose to stand firm on election integrity,” Cuccinelli continued. “Americans owe him their thanks for putting the interests of American voters and confidence in our elections first. He stood on principle when many others would have chosen convenience. President Trump has shown the kind of leadership on this issue that is too often missing in Washington.”

“As America prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence, President Trump and Senator Lee are standing firm on the principle that only American citizens should decide American elections. Passing the SAVE Act would give Americans even more to celebrate this Independence Day. Election integrity is not a partisan issue—it’s an American one,” Cuccinelli concluded.
