FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 4, 2024

Arlington, VA – As rescuing survivors and repairing damage continues in North Carolina, the alarming lack of state-level adjustment regarding the conduct of this year’s election has begun to appear intentional on the part of Democrat Governor Cooper and his allies.

Following the first emergency meeting of the State Board of Elections (NCSBE), with early voting just two weeks away, they did nothing.

  1. There are reports from nursing homes in the western counties relaying serious concerns about how relocated seniors will be able to vote.
  2. It is unknown which pre-approved polling sites are unserviceable in the 22 affected counties. State law requires the State Board to approve alternate sites, and that information then must be shared with all affected voters.
  3. There is no word on what will be done about the indefinite suspension of postal services in the western counties, which completely disrupts voting by mail.

National Chairman of the Election Transparency Initiative Ken Cuccinelli, who previously served as the Acting Deputy DHS Secretary and the Attorney General of Virginia, issued the following statement:

“America has learned a great deal about how best to execute an election following a natural disaster in the nearly 20 years since Katrina struck. While several of North Carolina’s neighboring states have moved to implement those lessons, North Carolina’s Governor Cooper has been shockingly inactive, as have his allies on the State Board. We call on Gov. Cooper and the State Board to stop stalling and start working to ensure that those communities already devastated by Helene at least have their voice through their votes in this year’s election. Every day in which Gov. Cooper continues to stall ensures his suppression of the votes of his fellow Tarheels.

“To the extent Gov. Cooper refuses to make immediate adjustments, when the General Assembly Convenes next week we urge swift action from House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate Leader Berger to maintain the integrity of the upcoming election across the western counties of North Carolina—ensuring it proceeds securely and fairly without compromising the democratic process.”

The Election Transparency Initiative, a partnership between the American Principles Project (APP) and Susan B. Anthony (SBA) Pro-Life America, was organized to combat federal H.R. 1 and H.R. 4 legislation and advocate for state-based election reforms that voters can trust.
