Dannenfelser: Free, Fair, Transparent Elections Are Under Attack; This is an Issue of Strategic Importance to the Entire Pro-life Movement
Washington, D.C. –The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) announced today it will score against H.R.1, the so-called “For the People Act,” as explained in a score letter transmitted to Capitol Hill this week. The letter reads, in part:
“Free, fair, and transparent elections are fundamental to the ability of principled Americans to enact change. H.R. 1 would dramatically alter First Amendment protections by imposing onerous and unworkable regulatory standards on the ability of pro-life voters and the pro-life community to discuss policy issues with elected officials and the public. It would subject citizens who contribute to nonprofit organizations to harassment and intimidation by making their personal information available in a government-controlled data base, and through an expansion of the definition of ‘electioneering communications’ it would subject virtually all issue-related ads to burdensome disclaimer requirements.
“Susan B. Anthony List exists to elect pro-life lawmakers and to enact pro-life policies and laws. H.R. 1 directly targets our mission and the cause for which pro-life Americans care so deeply. Susan B. Anthony List strongly opposes and will score against H.R. 1.”
The decision to score the bill follows the announcement that SBA List has partnered with American Principles Project (APP) to form the Election Transparency Initiative, an effort chaired by former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. The minimum $5 million investment includes a grassroots lobbying campaign in opposition to H.R. 1 as well as going on offense in key state legislative fights.
“SBA List’s ability to win elections for pro-life candidates is predicated on a transparent, fair elections process. That process is under great threat both from pro-abortion Democrats in Washington and in key states. This is an issue of strategic importance to the entire pro-life movement,” added Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List.
SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
