“Federal elections should be decided by American citizens, and election officials should have reliable procedures to verify that requirement.”
Cuccinelli on OAN: California Voter ID Initiative Qualifies for Ballot as SAVE Act Debate Intensifies on Capitol Hill
ETI Chairman Ken Cuccinelli discusses California’s voter ID initiative and the growing national debate over the SAVE Act.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Arlington, VA — March 11, 2026 — As debate over the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act intensifies on Capitol Hill, the Election Transparency Initiative announced that National Chairman Ken Cuccinelli is available for media interviews to discuss the legislation and its implications for election administration nationwide. Lawmakers in both chambers are actively debating the legislation.
The SAVE Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections, reinforcing an existing federal requirement. Supporters say the legislation would provide election officials with the necessary tools to verify voter eligibility and strengthen public confidence in election outcomes.
As Congress debates the SAVE Act, voters nationwide are weighing similar election-integrity measures, underscoring the growing national focus on voter identification and citizenship verification in federal elections. In California, a proposed constitutional amendment requiring voter identification and citizenship verification has surpassed the required signature threshold and is expected to appear on the statewide ballot, where voters will have the opportunity to decide the issue directly. Organizers submitted roughly 1.3 million signatures, far exceeding the 874,000 signatures required to qualify the initiative for the statewide ballot.
“California voters are sending a powerful message that election integrity should not be a partisan issue,” said Ken Cuccinelli, National Chairman of the Election Transparency Initiative. “Basic safeguards such as voter identification and citizenship verification are common-sense protections that help ensure every legal vote counts and every voter can trust the outcome of our elections.”
“The basic principle is straightforward,” said Ken Cuccinelli, National Chairman of the Election Transparency Initiative. “Federal elections should be decided by American citizens, and election officials should have reliable procedures to verify that requirement.”
The SAVE Act has become a focal point in national discussions about election administration as lawmakers consider measures to strengthen transparency and voter confidence ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
Cuccinelli recently discussed the growing national debate over voter identification and citizenship verification in a national television interview.
