FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 12, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has announced the creation of the Election Integrity Unit at the Office of the Attorney General.

“The purpose of the unit is to provide advice, support, and resources to ensure that Virginia election law continues to be applied in a uniform manner, and increase confidence in our state elections,” the attorney general’s office stated.

National Chairman of the Election Transparency Initiative and former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli issued the following statement:

“In 2021, then-candidate Jason Miyares promised voters that he would work to restore trust in free and fair Virginia elections that are transparent, accountable, and secure. Now, the attorney general has emerged as a champion of election integrity demonstrating that our laws are to be obeyed, and that everyone is required to play by the same set of rules under a system of elections in which it’s easy to vote and hard to cheat. We applaud the attorney general for the important steps he’s taken to root out election crimes in Virginia and hold cheaters accountable, and to continue building on this important work so individuals who’ve become accustomed to ignoring and downright violating our laws will think twice.”

Recently, Miyares announced new charges being brought by a Grand Jury against former Prince William County General Registrar Michele White. The charges, which include two felony charges and one misdemeanor charge, all relate to improprieties involving the 2020 election.

“We applaud Attorney General Miyares and his dedicated team for shining a light on election crimes in Virginia, and for holding accountable officials who threaten our election processes and the confidence of American voters,” Cuccinelli said. “Make no mistake, one of the biggest problems of the 2020 election was state officials not obeying their own laws, leading to millions of disillusioned or disenfranchised voters who aren’t certain their votes will be counted fairly, openly, and equally in elections that are secure and accountable.”

The Election Transparency Initiative, a partnership between the American Principles Project (APP) and Susan B. Anthony (SBA) Pro-Life America was organized to combat federal H.R. 1 and H.R. 4 legislation and advocate for state-based election reforms that voters can trust.
