Latest Democrat Show-Vote Intended to Justify Elimination of 60-Vote Filibuster Rule

Washington, D.C. This week the “Freedom to Cheat Act” (S. 2747), legislation that would override state election laws, is expected to be considered by the United States Senate. S. 2747, like H.R. 1/S. 1 and H.R. 4/S. 4, is the Democrats’ latest attempt to force a partisan power grab into law and “retains significant portions of the For the People Act,” The Washington Post reports.

The “Freedom to Cheat Act” would effectively abolish voter I.D. protections for most ballots, force states to register illegal aliens and 16-year-olds to vote, erode election safeguards enacted by many states – making it nearly impossible to detect fraud – while mandating unsecure and unverifiable absentee voting practices, override voter roll maintenance laws, and dramatically alter First Amendment protections by imposing unnecessary and unworkable regulatory standards.

National Chairman of the Election Transparency Initiative and former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli issued the following statement:

“It’s often said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Call it cliché—but Democrats have made a believer out of me. Any rational observer can see that their continued attempts to force a Washington takeover of elections into law are failing because their unpopular policies are fundamentally far too radical, extreme, and harmful for Americans to stand. For years now, Democrats have continued their media-assisted ‘voter suppression’ myth to advance bills like S. 2747 despite continuing improvements in access to both registration and voting. In fact, it has never been easier to vote for every American than it is today—a fact of which we should all be proud.

“It should be easy to vote and hard to cheat in our elections. Unfortunately, Democrats want to override state election laws they don’t like for political gain, rig the system in their favor, and silence millions of American voices to ensure they can’t lose for the next 100 years—by gutting the 60-vote filibuster. We urge Republicans and every member of the Senate to reject this partisan legislation deceptively presented under the guise of ‘voting rights’ and instead support free and fair elections voters can trust.”

2747 would subject citizens who contribute to nonprofit organizations to harassment and intimidation by making their personal information available in a government-controlled data base, and through an expansion of the definition of “electioneering communications,” it would subject virtually all issue-related ads to burdensome disclaimer requirements even if unrelated to a candidate for elected office.

Recent national polls show the majority of voters, including Black and Hispanic voters, as well as urban and independent voters, overwhelmingly support voter I.D. protections and want it to be easy to vote and hard to cheat.

The Election Transparency Initiative, a partnership between American Principles Project (APP) and the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List), was organized to combat H.R. 1 and H.R. 4 and advocate for state-based election reforms that voters can trust.
